Anime Workouts: What’s The Best Show To Publicly Sweat To???

If there’s one thing I’m struggling with as I stumble into adulthood, it’s time management. Seriously, how am I supposed to balance socializing, hobbies, and a full-time job? And have time to cook a well-balanced meal once in a while, and hit the gym? It’s baffling to me. When do adults have time to liiiiiive? I don’t understaaaaaaaaaand!

And taxes. I definitely don’t understand taxes!!!!!!!!! I’m doing them online and I don’t get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m exaggerating a bit. Now that I’ve gotten into the routine of my new job, I have been able to carve out more time for myself. It’s easier to go with a new flow once you’ve been flowing that flow a couple of months. You know?

Mainly, the way I’ve been managing to keep up with hobbies, work, and health is by combining them. I’ll draw while I watch anime so I can keep up on improving my amateur art skills, or listen to Japanese music/audio lessons on the drive to and from work to squeeze in some study time. My biggest health n’ hobby mashup, though, is watching anime at the gym. I go to a little rec center that’s near my house when I have time, and I’ll hop on the treadmill with my phone and catch up on some shows.

The problem is, watching anime in public can be a bit of a…risky endeavor. You know what I mean. Even “normal” shows will throw some surprise titties at you, and those titties always show up at the worst times. Like when you were in middle school and Naruto was always busting out the Sexy Jutsu when your mom was around, or when your roommates come home with a group of their cool friends and then suddenly there’s an underage girl getting sensually squeezed by a snake on your living room TV…

“It’s not what you think, guys! Bakemonogatari is artsy and deep, I promise!”

When you’re at the gym, you especially have to be careful, because not only can someone look over and catch you watching something that looks pervy, they’ll see you working up a sweat to something pervy-looking. Plus, not all anime is exactly good for a work-out motivation – as much as I love slice of life shows, they don’t exactly hype you up. All that being said, my journey to finding The Perfect Work-Out Anime has been a rocky one. Let me treadmill-run you through some of my public anime watching mistakes, and show you what anime ended up being best for working out. The anime workout quality will be rated in plewds (💦 ). I was going to say they would be rated in sweat drop emojis, but then I learned that an alternative name for this emoji is “plewds,” so guess what I’m going to forever call sweat from this point onward??

Citrus 💦 💦 💦 (negative 3 plewds)
I really, really wanted to catch up on Citrus a few weeks ago, but why I thought I could boot that one up in public is beyond me. The gym was fairly empty, so I pulled an episode up on my phone and started watching. Naturally, this episode featured plenty of smooching and girls being in comprised positions because, duh, of course it did. Within the first few seconds, there was Questionable Content, and after about ten minutes of me looking over my shoulder checking to see if anyone was watching me get sweaty to anime girls making out, I had to just click out.

It could inspire your workout if you imagine you’re running from the police after they catch you watching this in public, though.

Juuni Taisen 💦  (one measley plewd)
Last season, I thought that Juuni Taisen would be a good workout show since it’s supposed to be about an intense death match between skilled warriors. I figured it would set the mood for my elliptical workout, but no…Juuni Taisen more about talking than fighting. Which is fine for general viewing, I suppose, but not fun for running.

LoveLive! Sunshine  💦  (maybe like a plewd & a half)
So, LoveLive! Sunshine almost works for an inspiring workout. Even though it has plenty of slice of life elements, it’s essentially the story of nine girls working hard to reach their goals. Plus, they’re always training onscreen, which makes me want to work a little harder to keep up with their pace. The problem is, you run into that same problem I did with Citrus…it does look a little weird sweating and getting pumped up over a bunch of teenage girls…

Ehehe…no, no, I’m not the same girl you saw working out while watching anime girls kiss in the shower…

Pop Team Epic 💦 💦  (two plewds)
It’s weird and sporadic, which leads to a weird and sporadic workout. Though it has some balls-to-the-walls moments, the tone changes with each skit, so it’s like, you’re not really sure what pace you’re going to end up falling into or matching. Plus, the repeating of the jokes just makes me feel like my workout is dragging forever. Not the best.

Yuru Camp (no plewds, too relaxing)
Yuru Camp
just made me stop running and start strolling on the treadmill. Plus, it just made me hungry. They eat so much good food that it just made me want to eat a bunch of rice and meat right after my workout…totally undoing any calories burned after my already weakass “run.”

Yuru Camp - 06 - Large 02
No, no, this show is wholesome! I’m just working up a sweat to a wholesome anime bath scene! Oh, that doesn’t sound better, does it?

One Punch Man – 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 (hella plewds)
Of course One Punch Man got me hyped! What could be more inspiring than seeing a superhero who got so super just by sticking to his work-out regiment? All those battle scenes got me pretty pumped up on the treadmill. Only downside? It’s too short of a series! I finished my rewatch after a few weeks, and had to go back to the drawing board for a new, perfectly pumped up show to watch.

And the prestigious “Best Anime Workout Award” goes to…

Hunter x Hunter💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦 💦
It’s got action. It’s got heart. It’s got inspirational shounen speeches. Best of all? It’s got, like, a million episodes, so I can keep watching it at the gym for a long time! I actually have a little deal with myself – I’ll only watch Hunter x Hunter while I work out. This way, whenever I’m really invested in an arc (which is, well, always), I basically have to go back to the gym so that I can figure out what happens next. So not only are the character motivating me, but the need for more anime goodness is, too!

Finally…balance is restored to my gym-anime viewing chakra…I just need to make sure nothing weird ever happens in Hunter x Hunter that’ll make anyone suspicious…

  1. Haha, this was such a great post! I never really thought about the whole’ watching anime in public’ thing, but I guess it’s something that busy people have to consider! I think you can buy screen covers that obscure what you’re watching to people around you? Or maybe I imagined that, I don’t know, I swear I saw something like that in Japan!

But seriously, this has got me thinking which show would be best for gym workouts, that contains high energy while being low on the lewd… Tough decision!

    1. Oh I have seen things like that actually! But they weren’t screen covers, they were like hoods you put over your phone/face? Maybe it was just a weird meme…
I’m glad you liked it though! The gym I go to is mostly old ladies so like, realistically they probably can’t see my screen anyways but like, I know Agatha over on the next treadmill would judge me if she could!

  2. Yeah, noticed that shonen battle series are usually the way to go when it comes to working out at the gym. I think you hit the nail on the head with HxH.

Thanks for doing the research for us.

  3. I just got a treadmill and put it in my room. 😀 Now I can watch whatever I want while working out… which I need to do more often…

Great post! I think you nailed these.

  4. I only work out when I watch anime and almost vice versa. I find sports aime are a good combo as well and at the time AoT was a great choice although people at the gym would come explain it to you all the time for some reason….

    1. HAHA WAIT my friend has an AoT hoodie & people will just randomly approach her & not so much talk to her about it as they would talk AT her about the plot haha. Also duh why didn’t I think of sports anime!

  5. It really is amazing how anime that is mostly wholesome and good for over the shoulder lookers, always, always had that one scene that will make your parents, or strangers, ask “what are you watching?” Like, every anime I’ve seen so far.

The only anime I’ve ever worked or to was sword art online, that was pretty good for pumping me up at times.

    1. oh yeah, that seems like a good one! And for real, growing up we had the family computer in my parents’ room so it was always a nerve-wracking experience watching any anime in there, because who knows what would end up happening 😂
