Wowee, the new anime season is upon us! And I…well I didn’t really watch enough of last season to really comment on it! Oops!
Truth be told, this season I’ve really only finished Citrus. Sora yori mo tooi basho was my actual Winter 2018 front-runner, but my little sister was really enjoying Citrus and Pop Team Epic, so I made more time for those shows instead so that we could watch them together.
Even though I didn’t actually watch that much of Winter 2018, I still want to join the fun in doing a little “best of the season” countdown. Except…I didn’t watch enough to really declare a best show or best director, or even best opening. I don’t even know enough to declare a best girl. I watched enough to get a feel for, um, what some characters in some shows look like? I can’t even remember most of the names of most of these characters… but for some reason, I do remember their eyebrows. I don’t know what it is, but whenever I’m watching an anime, the first thing I notice about a character is their ‘brows.
I just love it when they’ve got those thick nubby brows instead of a simple thin arc, you know what I mean? They’re more expressive, more elegant. Think about it – don’t you dig an anime girl more when she’s got some big ass caterpillar brows up there? I’m very passionate about thick anime brows…I even have a soft spot for scruffy old man anime brows, too.
So without further ado, here is my top 10 anime eyebrows of the Winter 2018 that I felt the need to put together, for some reason.
10.) Momokino (Citrus)
Momokino, or as my sister and I lovingly called her, “Corkscrew Bitch,” had these purple, spiky lil brows that reminded me of a chihuahua. They fit her very well, and so they’ve earned Citrus a spot on this top ten list. It’ll probably be the only spot Citrus gets on any “best of winter 2018” list, if we’re being honest.
9.) Souichi Tsuji (Junji Ito Collection)
Not only does Souichi have a scraggle going on, he also has that permanent upturn and a little crease. Though they are not exactly the eyebrows that I crave, I could not let these creepy fellas go unrecognized.
8.) That Old Guy in Darling in the Franxx
Yeah, I really couldn’t get into this anime. I watched two episodes and quit because I knew I wouldn’t like the direction it was going in regarding gender and compulsive heterosexuality. There was one thing I gathered from it, though: that Zero Two eyebrows were a’ight, but this guy’s singular human eyebrow was off the chain. If he had a sick cybernetic eyebrow to go with it, he could’ve made it way higher on this list.
7.) Like, any male character in Kokkoku
Hey, I watched, like an episode of this! I really don’t know what it was about, and judging from other people’s reviews, no one else really knows what it ended up being about, either. I am about this family’s eyebrows, though, especially Jiisan’s. He’s got the good old man scraggle.
6.) Masami Kondou (After the Rain)
Those babies kind of make me understand why this girl would thirst for a man twice her age. They really make him feel like a sympathetic dude. The way they peak more towards the mid-forehead instead of the center of the brow just really speaks to me. The bitter, angry waitress behind him here deserves a shout-out, too.
5.) Hakumei (Hakumei to Mikochi)
LOOK AT THOSE LITTLE NUBS!! This is the content I come to anime for – lil tiny anime girls with lil tiny anime eyebrows. I’m going to watch this based on those brows alone. I’m not even kidding. They’re so friggin’ cute.
4.) Mikochi (Hakumei to Mikochi)
Is it cheating to list both of the characters from this show separately, when I really could have just combined them into one? Yes, it is! It’s because I’ve gotten to this point and realized I really don’t have enough content for a top ten anime eyebrows list, but there’s no going back now! So, umm, her eyebrows – they good!
3.) Hinata Miyaka (Sora yori mo Tooi Basho)
Though they may not be the thickest brows, they are some of the most expressive. As you can see above, she’s very capable of forming those brows into a nice smolder. In all seriousness, Hinata Miyaka might be one of my new favorite anime characters because she’s so over-the-top and yet somehow, down-to-earth. One day, I will finish Sora yori mo Tooi Basho so that I can write more in praise of her, but right now, all I got is – she’s got some good ass brows.
2.) Miko (Devilman Crybaby)
Miko’s eyebrows before becoming a demon? I sleep. Miko’s eyebrows after becoming a demon? REAL SHIT. They’re pointy, they’re angry, they’re everything I could have ever wanted from a bisexual demon spiderwoman. Thank you, Miko. You’ve made my dreams come true.
And the title of Winter 2018 Eyebrow Queen goes to….
1.) Aoi Inuyama (Yuru Camp)
Honestly? I only watched the first two episodes of Yuru Camp, so I didn’t even get to any episodes where Aoi had actual lines. I have no idea what her character is like! But believe me, when we got to see her in motion at the end of episode two, I actually gasped. Look at those beauts. They almost hold a candle to Eyebrow Queen Tsumugi Kotobuki. Almost. Obviously, with a look like that, her eyebrows had to be crowned number one.
Everyone else in Devilman Crybaby
Not only did Devilman: Crybaby fulfill my demon bisexual spider-woman eyebrow dreams, it kinda made all my anime eyebrow dreams come true. Akira had those scraggly demon brows, Ryo had some thick-ish blonde beauties, and my beautiful son Taro had the little nubby brows I love so much. Who needs to analyze the show’s avant-garde animation when you can just critique their eyebrows the whole time, right?
Hellshake Yano (Pop Team Epic)
Yano had the whole anime community shook, but for some reason no one was talking about his eyebrows??? Look at how expressive they are! Without those babies, he woulda been more like…Hellwiggle Yano.
That Cop from B: The Beginning
Oh yeah, here’s an anime I actually finished. Except that I hated it because it made no sense and the tone shifted every five seconds. All the characters were pretty flat and it felt like their motivations changed every other episode, but hey – I do have to give this guy props for those mothy buggers on his forehead. I really didn’t bother to remember anyone’s name in this anime, but it doesn’t matter because I’m naming his brows “Harold” and “Horace.” Harold and Horace have more personality than any character on this show.
Wow, you really read to the end of this nonsense! Thank you for indulging me by reading this list. I’m trying to make it a point to post more often, and as you can see, I’m pretty strapped for ideas that don’t involve a review of Citrus! 😉
I’m sure I missed some quality nominees, so PLEASE tell me about some stand-out anime eyebrows from this season (or any season, I’m not picky).
